Boston Mayor Wu stands firm on tax shift

Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston remains committed to her controversial property tax shift bill, despite significant opposition. She said: “We cannot let it be that our state and our community can find the funds to host the World Cup but not get worked up about our seniors not being able to stay in their homes.” Wu’s proposal aims to alleviate the projected 13% tax increase for homeowners by shifting the tax burden from residential to commercial properties. However, the state Senate recently rejected her bill with a decisive 33-5 vote. State Senator Nick Collins countered Wu’s claims, asserting that the Senate passed property tax relief measures for seniors and small businesses. As the debate continues, Wu’s administration is evaluating final construction bids for the $200m White Stadium project, which has also faced criticism regarding its costs.
