The IRS is urging taxpayers to enhance their protection against identity theft by enrolling in the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) program for the upcoming 2025 tax season. Over 10.4m taxpayers currently utilize the unique six-digit IP PIN, which is essential for verifying identity during tax filing. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stated: “This PIN isn’t just another number for taxpayers to memorize. In a sense, it’s a secret number between the taxpayer and the IRS that freezes out fraudsters.” Taxpayers can create an IRS Online Account to access their tax information securely and prepare for the IP PIN program’s reopening in early January 2025.
